The Messy In AI Era
5 min reading

TL;DR
Designing for AI is chaotic because LLM outputs are totally unpredictable. The goal right now isn't adding sparkly gradient icons to every screen; it's creating UI patterns that make volatile models feel smooth, reliable, and human.
Gradients, Sparkles, and Hype
Right now, the whole tech industry is just slapping a gradient sparkle icon on everything and calling it "AI-powered." It is incredibly messy. As a product designer, trying to create UI for AI models is wild because you are no longer designing a static, predictable flow. You’re designing for an engine that generates random, unpredictable output every single time a user clicks a button. The old layout paradigms don't work when you don't know if the incoming text response will be two words or eight paragraphs long.
Taming Unpredictable Interfaces
The user experience challenges are completely unprecedented. How do you handle loading states when an LLM takes 10 seconds to generate a response without making the app feel broken? How do you gracefully communicate to a user that the system just hallucinated wrong information? We are all kind of making up the UI patterns as we go along. The real challenge isn't making these tools look futuristic; it's making them feel reliable, controllable, and human-friendly instead of jarring and creepy.
Designing Beyond the Gimmick
Eventually, the novelty of generic AI wrappers is going to wear off, and users will demand actual utility. Designers who can tame this mess—by creating intuitive prompt surfaces, clear feedback loops, and subtle integrations—are the ones who will define the next decade of software. Until then, we’re all just surviving the gold rush of sparkle icons and chat interfaces.
